Comments: A great follow up to Divergent, being more interesting and less plain. Tris finds herself on the run after the events of the previous book, and throughout the novel, discovers a massive secret and bigger conspiracy plan than she would have expected. If you thought the whole world was reduced to one single city in the bleak future, then this book starts to explain that. The events become more political however, the theme focuses on secrets and betrayal, both of which happen frequently in the book. This is also where it falls down because characters are always suspecting each other, breaking their trust. Unlike Divergent which only touched upon the more intimate areas of Tris and Four's relationship sparingly until the end, Insurgent constantly puts their relationship at the forefront, and it fumbles. Insurgent also ends up teasing you with some huge secret but does not reveal it until literally the last few pages of the book and even then, the full impact isn't revealed too much. Despite all these writing and pacing flaws, Insurgent was fun and hooks you in, much more than you would expect. The story was interesting and there was never a dull moment, even if it makes you wonder at times how the characters can be so stereotyped into their factions.
