Dante's Peak

Set in the fictional town of Dante's Peak, Pierce Brosnan plays Dr. Harry Dalton, a volcanologist.  You can see where this is going.  He is sent to Dante's Peak to check out the unusual happenings of the dormant volcano, which eventually erupts and chaos ensues as the town tries to evacuate.  Before that happens though, you will have an hour of set up which isn't as bad as it sounds.  The way the danger was slowly escalating, setting the tone until the first eruption was great.  The events that lead to the situation seemed believable.  Once the eruption happened and people panicked, you can start to feel how despairing and horrible the situation would be if you were in it.  While the movie deviates a bit by having Harry save his lover's grandma and children by going back up the volcano, there were some interesting moments.  The ending felt abrupt but after the biggest event happening in which the pyroclastic flow of ash comes down, there's nothing else that the writers could have done to extend the moment.  Overall, a good movie that's more believable and better than Volcano, which was released in the same year.
