Book Review: Diary of a Wimpy Vampire

Review:  #239
Title:  Diary of a Wimpy Vampire
Series:  Diary of a Wimpy Vampire - 1st book
Author:  Tim Collins
Read Before:  no
My Comments:  Judging from the title, you can be excused if you thought this was a rip off or parody of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.  Well, that fact is true, yes, but it is also a lot better than you would have imagined.  It’s not the shoddy piece of work that you expect of obvious rip offs.  I read that someone described this book as a cross between Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Twilight and I found that to be a very accurate description.  The first part of the book was great, seeing how the main character, Nigel, failed at being a vampire.  The description of vampires is really similar to Twilight, but the way that the author twisted it around Nigel was interesting.  It almost seems like that author is making fun of the Twilight version of vampires.  The writing style really seems to be like a diary entry, and it made me empathize with Nigel’s predicaments.  The major plot point is Nigel’s quest to find a girlfriend, and when the girl he fancies went out with another person, you feel for Nigel, you are sad too, for the author to create this empathy from the reader takes a lot of skill.  However, once Nigel actually succeeded in getting a girlfriend, it becomes somewhat less interesting, and the ending was too ‘open’ for my liking.  There are some really good humour scattered evenly throughout the whole book and I enjoyed this book a lot.
