Book Review: The Demigod Diaries

Review:  #306
Title:  The Demigod Diaries
Series:  Heroes of Olympus - companion book
Author:  Rick Riordan
Read Before:  no
My Comments:  A decent companion book, the short stories are much more satisfying and less shallow than the ones in The Demigod Files.  There are four short stories, each of them a decent length (each them around 40-70 pages long), and are enjoyable to read (instead of feeling like filler).  There are still various other content that are used to pad out of the length, and most of the feel pointless.  You get some pictures of areas in the series, word searches and ridiculously, a whole page dedicated to repeating the prophecy.  In terms of the short stories, The Diary of Luke Castellan was interesting, even if it felt like a somewhat awkward retcon.  Percy Jackson and the Staff of Hermes was great (and my favourite story in this collection), particularly since it was written in first person, something we haven’t seen since The Last Olympian.  Leo Valdex and the Quest for Bulford felt contrived but a good read nonetheless.  The Son of Magic, a short story written by the author’s son, was impressive (considering who wrote it) but you’d notice a distinct shift in the writing style.  It also felt out of Percy’s world, not part of the main narrative, and you can see where some of the inspirations come from.  The promised revelations were ordinary.  This is a worthwhile companion book to read.
