Book Review: Oracle

Review:  #417
Title:  Oracle
Series:  N/A
Author:  Jackie French
Read Before:  no
My Comments:  A mystifying and beautiful book that is more akin to Greek tragedies and instills a sense of tranquility into you.  It’s hard to describe but the way the story is presented is so cool and calming, as if you’re watching the events unfold from afar and wondering how things are going to pan out.  Basically, the plot involves a boy (the protagonist) and his sister, and how they proceed from just a mountain villager to esteemed performers (to the High King, no less) to their downfall.  There is a twist, in that the sister chooses not to talk but when she does, she has to speak the truth.  There is no magic in this and the ending is very satisfying, everything seems to fit.  From around halfway the book picks up in terms of emotional attachment, the characters grow and change and there is a sense of tragedy and loss near the end.  While not the most exciting or involves of books, the story feels meaningful and the setting (in Mycenean Greece) is unique.
