Pacific Rim

The way the mecha is controlled reminds me of Neon Genesis Evangelion and the monsters remind me of Ultraman and Gozilla, which makes for a very Japanese feel to the movie.  It was an enjoyable and fun movie, the fight scenes between giant robots and giant monsters had immense appeal.  While you can see through the realism of the special effects easily, it was still impressive.  The fight scenes were great fun to watch.  They created an interesting background to the Kaiju (the monsters) that makes you want to learn more about them.  The music was amazing and it was something that stood out.  It filled the action scenes with adrenaline.  While fighting on water is pretty good, it would have been nice if there were more scenes that didn’t take place over or under water.  I was also hoping for an epic finale fight at the climax, while it was still good, it didn’t compare to the major fight before it.

However, the most important good aspect is... it makes you want more.  There are enough good things to let the not-so-great things slide.  For example, the flashbacks, the predictable relationship and how the pair will be the one to save everything and the slightly odd characters.  Another thing that would be nice is if other Jaegers had more screentime, there are four in total, two got annihilated within minutes and the movie focuses on the two remaining.  While brutal and gives the impact needed, it would be cool if we could see them in action a bit longer.  Pacific Rim has that nostalgic feel in which the themes and design seems to resonate with the awesomeness of the past, but made better.  Overall, a thoroughly intense film that makes the two hours breeze by so quickly.
