Book Review: City of Bones

Review:  #508
Title:  City of Bones
Series:  The Mortal Instruments - 1st book
Author:  Cassandra Clare
Read Before:  no
Comments:  City of Bones dives into a world where vampires, werewolves, demons and all your other supernatural creatures exist and live among the humans in disguise.  Clary, who is supposedly normal human, is thrown into that world when her mother is attacked and kidnapped.  The world as we know it rapidly expands, including a whole organization of Shadowhunters who kills the demons.  All the running around and investigation leads to the conclusion that they need to find the Cup.  Along the way, Clary develops feelings for the sharp tongued Jace.  While there has been comparisons with Twilight and the fact that the plot eventually develops a love triangle and focuses on forbidden love, the romance wasn’t heavy and did not take up a huge portion of the book.  In fact, it was only in the last third of the book where it took up some more screen time and even then, it was a side plot.  The first half of the book was fairly stock standard and mundane, there wasn’t anything that surprised or engrossed you into the world.  The second half was better once the objective was revealed and we learn more of each character’s backstory.  Overall, not a bad story but leaves some to be desired.  The characters show potential as does the story which was obviously written with the mind of sequels.
