Book Review: No Game No Life Vol. 1

Review:  #540
Title:  No Game No Life Vol. 1
Series:  No Game No Life - 1st volume
Author:  Yuu Kamiya
Read Before:  no
Comments:  No Game No Life is about a pair of siblings, known collectively as " ", but separate as Sora and Shiro.  They get transported into another world where everything is determined by games.  There, they set out to get ahead of the world and in the end, become the monarch of the last Immanity country, Elkia, with a view to take on the rest of the world.  The first half of the novel requires some time to take off, and the plot as a whole doesn't really elevate.  It could be due to the translation but it lacks the emotional punch that it is striving for, not even Sora's speech as the King or his preposterous outburst during a game could tug your heartstrings.  However, the cleverness remains, even though it gets muddled with the constant distractions of the narrator.  Occasionally, there will be paragraphs where the novel goes on a tangent and it doesn't feel like that there is a point to it all.  Other than this, the illustrations are fantastic and just enough happens for you to get through to the end.
