Book Review: Deadfall

Review:  #545
Title:  Deadfall
Series:  Agent 21 - 5th book
Author:  Chris Ryan
Read Before:  no
Comments:  Zak Darke (Agent 21) once again confronts his nemesis Cruz Martinez and you get a sense that this might be the novel that resolves this conflict.  It starts out with Zak scoping out for Cruz but as expected, it blows out of proportion and he finds himself in something much bigger.  Taking place in the jungle, the plot was intense and satisfying.  Thrown in for good measure, and also to good effect, are the tips for surviving in the jungle.  It is cleverly woven into the narrative and keeps things interesting.  There were various points in the story where the situation is bleak and you wonder how Zak gets out of it.  In some cases, Zak uses his ingenuity, in others, it is pure luck.  The situations where Zak survives through luck or something beyond his control feels like a cheap way, just because it feels lazy compared to the author's track record.  The ending was good, especially you can feel the story building up towards the climax.  The ending was slightly disappointing, the resolution not perfect, but it was still engrossing.
