Book Review: The Creeping Shadow

Review:  #679
Title:  The Creeping Shadow
Series:  Lockwood & Co. - 4th book
Author:  Jonathan Stroud
Read Before:  no
Comments:  The Creeping Shadow is an excellent novel that continues to one-up the previous books in the series.  While it retains the detached subplot feel, such as having multiple separate (seemingly) unrelated hauntings that the team suppresses, it has a tightly-knitted plot.  The author is amazing in constructing an interesting alternate world filled with intricacies about the characteristics of ghost hunting.  This keeps you addicted, wanting to find out more and more, from mysterious artefacts with power to more information about the Other Side.  Lucy begins the book as a freelance but is naturally drawn back to Lockwood & Co. for help.  The talking skull takes on a bigger role and while it was quite repulsive when it was first introduced in The Screaming Staircase, its sarcastic but helpful nature is becoming endearing.  Of course, most of the novel builds up to the encounter with the Creeping Shadow, who isn’t what you would expect.  As the characters dance with danger, there are massive revelations that have huge consequences, and some of which is left to be resolved in the final book.  The Creeping Shadow is one of the best stories and while it isn’t too scary, it will still send a chill which is strangely addictive.
