X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)
The film starts off in ancient Egypt where we are shown a powerful mutant performing a ritual, which goes terribly wrong and is left in slumber for thousands of years. Fast forward to the 1980s, he is awakened and revealed to be the first mutant the world has scene, with an ability that makes him the most powerful mutant in the world. After this, the film's pacing slows down as we are slowly introduced to the cast of this film, including Cyclops, Jean and Storm. Characters in the previous film include favourites Quicksilver, Mystique, the Beast and of course, the two friends/enemies Xavier and Magneto. Over ten years has passed since Days of Future Past and Magneto has been trying to live the quiet life, which is surprising. Events happen which eventually leads him to become the villain again, the relationship between him and Xavier is one of the stronger points of Apocalypse. Unfortunately, so much time is taken trying to introduce all these new characters than they all feel short-changed. None are truly fleshed out and can be confusing if you are not familiar with the characters already from other mediums. The plot doesn't get much more complex than the villain wanting to destroy the world and rule over what is left afterwards. There is plenty of special effects but feels like there is too much destruction and not enough more personal combat between the mutants. Overall, while X-Men: Apocalypse can get messy in its storytelling, it was an enjoyable journey.
