Book Review: Akira Volume 1

Review:  #729
Title:  Akira Volume 1
Series:  Akira - 1st volume
Author:  Katsuhiro Otomo
Read Before:  no
Comments:  Set in a post-apocalyptic Neo-Tokyo, it follows Kaneda, a leader of a street gang who finds himself within the world of a conspiracy by the army.  He encounters the resistance and discovers people with psycho-kinetic powers and mentions of “Akira”.  It’s not revealed anymore in this first volume who or what Akira is but slowly sets up the plot and introduces the characters.  You know that Kaneda and Kei are the protagonists but they seem to be lacking in chemistry right now.  However, the rest of the characters carry the plot through, increasing momentum as Kaneda’s friend, Tetsuo is dragged right into the thick of the mess.  The apparent supernatural powers peaks your interest and the volume teases so many concepts and ideas that it’s hard to not look forward to more.  The artwork still holds out today, while yes, it looks like it was from a while ago but it still has a lot of detail and is aesthetically pleasing.
