Book Review: The Supernaturalist

Review:  #773
Title:  The Supernaturalist
Series:  N/A
Author:  Eoin Colfer
Comments:  The Supernaturalist has a very interesting concept.  It takes place in the future, a bleak future where pollution has ruined the Earth.  Technology has advanced rapidly but so has the divide between the rich and the poor, and the seeming loss of morals.  Cosmos is an orphan and one day he manages to escape the cruelty he had been suffering.  He gains the ability see to creatures that are normally invisible to humans, and he dawns upon a horrible truth.  The creatures, the parasites, suck the life force out of humans.  He joins a band who calls themselves the Supernaturalists and embarks on getting rid of these parasites from the world.  The author does a great job of pulling twists to surprise the reader.  While the wonders never ceases, the tension goes up and down and pacing can be slow towards the middle.  The scenes can feel flat and uninspiring; however, it does culminate into a satisfying ending.
