Love Tyrant (2017)
Love Tyrant is based on the manga, with 12 episodes. It stars Guri, an angel, who possesses the Kiss Note. The power of the Kiss Note is that any two names you write into the notebook will cause them to kiss each other within 24 hours. As a side effect, they will fall in love. It just so happens that Guri accidentally wrote in Aino Seiji's name and thus she has to get him to kiss someone otherwise she will die. Aino tries kissing Guri but unfortunately it doesn't work that way.
The pacing is quick within the first episode with it ending up having Aino kissing his crush Hiyama Akane. She is also one of the most popular girls in the school and the crush of many others. It seems sweet at first since Akane confesses that she has a thing for Aino too. Unfortunately, Aino finds out the hard way that she is a yandere and it becomes a "love triangle" after Guri felt it was a great idea to put their three names together into the notebook.
The situation quickly becomes more complicated with the introduction of Kichougasaki Yuzu (sister of Akane), Aqua (Aino's sister) and Shiramine Shikimi (Akane's cousin). It's a complicated relationship as each are infatuated with a different person. Before the halfway mark, you realize that Aino has his hands full as pretty much all this "love interests" are crazy in one life-threatening way or another. Through this arrangement, everyone temporarily becomes an angel, meaning that they cannot die. This also lends to bodily harm as a major source of gags in the anime. The side effect though is that their souls are tied to Guri and if Guri doesn't do her job properly of spreading love, then they all go to hell.
The series has many things happening spontaneously with plenty of references to boot. Throughout it all, Akane is crazy and will do cruel things if anything has happened to Aino. The thing is, she has the skills to with knives and martial arts to back it up, easily dispatching robbers who had shot and lightly grazed Aino. Each episode has odd supernatural type occurrences where no one bats an eye at yet it is not explained to the viewer. Akane is abnormally strong and seemingly pulls knives out of nowhere, Yuzu has some type of shield and Shikimi can summon threads to trap people. These can somewhat be overlooked but then we get a demonic penguin (with an overused gag) and ghosts so it's hard to tell what is the nature of this world.
The main overaching plot point is that Aino is tasked with helping Guri to understand what is love (despite her being charged with helping people find love, she does not know what it is like to be in love). Slowly but surely, Guri starts to learn what love feels like, including the negatives such as jealously on seeing Aino and Akane getting along so well. Each character had hidden depths and backstories which explain their personalities and how they got to that point. Naturally, this causes complications in the relationship with Aino.
Overall, While Love Tyrant does not have any surprises at all in regards to the plot of characters, it does have a strong lead up to the ending. The ending serves as a good stopping point and forces the characters to pause and not only take stock of their feelings, but to express it too. The anime has enough funny scenes to make it worthwhile although it is a tad bit generic.
