Book Review: The Ice Maze
Review: #807
Title: The Ice Maze
Series: The Kingdom of the Lost - 3rd book
Author: Isobelle Carmody
Comments: Bily and Zluty continues their journey to the Velvet City in order to save the Monster from death. The novel, like the previous two, focuses on the journey and a specific midway destination that they stop at. It is an interesting journey, as they travel through the icy mountains and if not for the help of their companions, the Diggers, they would have perished a long time ago. However, the pacing is still quite slow and there is no clear climax that the plot was aiming towards, thus feeling a little flat once the finale came and went. The best sections are when the group settles down each night and complete their preparations, whether it be creating a fire to cook or piling snow onto the wheels of their wagon such that it won’t dislodge during the night. It feels as if it is a survival excursion. A lot more details about the Velvet City and the Monster is revealed in the second half of the book, but it was clear all along that it was just setting up for the next novel instead.
