A Letter to Momo (2011)
A Letter to Momo is a Japanese animation in which eleven year old girl, Momo, moves to a small island city with her mother from Tokyo after the loss of her father. As she struggles to overcome her loss and accept the changes in her life, she encounters three yokai that only she can see. From there, it tells the story of how Momo eventually overcomes those struggles with the help of the yokai. The animation is great and it tells a sweet story, with enough deep emotional themes to make you appreciate what you have. However, Momo never truly develops a strong friendship with the three yokai, and neither do the three yokai ever become truly likable. Thus, when the ending comes around and things rest on the yokai helping, it doesn't give you quite the same sense of satisfaction as it should. Despite that, the film still has an excellent plot (albeit a slow pacing one) that delivers a complete story.
