Book Review: Incredible Stories from Space

Review:  #871
Title:  Incredible Stories from Space
Series:  N/A
Author:  Nancy Atkinson
Comments:  This non-fiction book covers various missions and their results that explored and is currently exploring, the solar system.  Covering all major missions from New Horizons to Kepler, it provides an interesting insight to not only the scientific results from these missions, but also the issues encountered by the teams.  One of the most impressive aspects is how complex these missions are, and how much effort goes behind making them work.  There are numerous obstacles to overcome and when you realize that a spacecraft is somewhere in the middle of space with no way of physically going there to fix any malfunctions, it makes it all the more impressive at how the teams adapt and find novel solutions.  The plentiful pictures and illustrations do a great job at instilling a sense of wonder and amazement.  A real machine that was actually on the surface of the moon Titan took a picture; this is exactly what a foreign place in the solar system looked like at that point in time.  It’s unbelievable and the author does a great job at explaining all this.
