Power Rangers (2017)

Power Rangers is a live-action take based on the TV series, but with a higher budget of course.  One of the side effects of the higher budget is naturally the lavish use of CGI for a huge portion the film.  This is because it takes on a sci-fi angle with the origins of the suits, the powers and what the group has to protect.  Unfortunately, the film fails in several key areas that had plagued live-action superhero films and this makes it generic and predictable.  It also tends to encourage the wrong type of behavior.  All the characters in the film have done something wrong, but yet their supposedly "terrible" choices lead to good results, whether that from finding friends or their powers.  The group of five is haphazardly put together and we never get to see the proper Power Rangers in action a short sequence during the climax.  This is probably the most disappointing aspect.  It has a nice build up in the beginning but then fizzles out.  The characters do not work well as a group and it takes too long for them to wield their powers properly.  Even with the fancy suits, they will never cover their faces for more than a few seconds at a time.  The antagonist made some irrational choices and the final showdown was downright bland.  Power Rangers stumbles too much for it to be enjoyable.
