Spy (2015)
Spy is an action comedy that plays around with the spy genre of films but does it in such a genuinely funny way. Susan Cooper is a support officer for spies that are out on the field. Her physical appearance is a far cry from what you would expect of a field agent. However, she gets her chance when all the agents' identities are leaked and someone is needed to track down an portable nuclear weapon. Contrary to expectations, Susan is gifted in close combat as well as firearms, although not having had to use those skills for over ten years means that she can be clumsy and out of touch. The humor works really well, and since it is the type where all the characters have a deadpan delivery, it sneaks up on you at how good it can be. The humor manages to carry the whole film, making it enjoyable from start to finish. It doesn't so much as play with tropes as forging its own way ahead and subverting expectations. The plot doesn't get much more complicated than Susan getting close to her target to track the bomb's seller but the path it takes to get there is unpredictable. The characters are great and the film is a breath of fresh air among all the poor comedies out there.
