Book Review: The Poison Throne

Review:  #249
Title:  The Poison Throne
Series:  The Moorehawke Trilogy - 1st book
Author:  Celine Kiernan
Read Before:  no
My Comments:  A surprisingly dark and intense novel.  The novel revolves around palace politics, and poisonous is the only fitting description.  It builds up the reader’s attachment to the characters well; I was torn and shocked whenever something happened to them.  The writing is gripping, but the pace is too slow.  It’s a thick book, yet, it plods along, building up tension and suspense that it will never satisfy.  There were plenty of moments where I did not know what happened, or why the characters acted that way.  The author needs to explain it a bit more thoroughly or at least tell us the reason why.  There were a few confusing plot points.  The novel was structured with sequels in mind, the ending did not resolve anything at all, and left too many questions unanswered.  I can hardly say that this can be read standalone, which is a big flaw, especially after enduring so much.  An addictive read in its own way, but paved with some shortcomings.
