Toy Review: Transformers Robots in Disguise (2015) Starscream (Warrior)

Review:  #344
Name:  Starscream
Brand:  Transformers
Allegiance:  Decepticon
Line:  Robots in Disguise (2015)
Year of Release:  2016
Size Class:  Warrior
Mold Status:  new

JET MODE:

As you'd expect, Starscream transforms into a jet.  While the color scheme is your traditional Starscream colors of grey and blue, the design of the jet bears more resemblance to the Animated model with the forward swept wings and long nose.

The jet mode is generally very good.  The back half is comprised of the robot legs but that isn't obvious.  The arms tuck in underneath the wings and they do stick out a little bit.

In terms of size, he is wider than your typical Deluxe jet.  Above is BotCon Bitstream which uses the Classics Starscream mold.

He doesn't have proper landing gear, just a nub underneath the nosecone and then resting on his undercarriage.  Speaking of which, the undercarriage is minimal which is impressive.  He also has a small gun underneath each wing.

A better jet mode than expected although Starscream does feel a little bit light and flimsy considering the size.

TRANSFORMATION:

The transformation is simple and relies on a lot of untabbing and tabbing.  The way the cockpit forms his torso and where the head is located in the cockpit was a surprise and better executed than you would first think.  Otherwise, this is a fairly predictable transformation.

ROBOT MODE:

Starscream's robot mode is fantastic.  The light blue looks great and even the grey isn't too bad.

The wings form a cape although in their official position drooped down like this, something seems off.

The headsculpt is still clearly Starscream but lacks any menace and looks too cartoony for the character.

Size-wise in robot mode is decent although he is very hollow and can feel thin when in hand.

The guns on the outside of his forearms is another element reminiscent of his Animated incarnation.  Articulation is good but bigger heelspurs would be nice.  He has a Decepticon insignia on his left shoulder (which is inaccessible in jet mode).

His shoulder pads and wings as cape gives the figure a more regal look.  There are no other gimmicks in this mode so Starscream can feel a bit boring.

If preferred, you can swing the wings back up to a more traditional configuration but it is situated too high to look good.

A decent robot mode and probably the best figure this incarnation of Starscream is going to get.

OVERALL:

Starscream was a surprise, turning up in stores without fans even knowing he existed.  The toy itself is solid but you can't help but think that the figure doesn't do anything new or clever.  There's nothing making him stand out compared to other more inventive figures in the line.  As a Toys R Us exclusive, if you can find him at RRP then he is definitely worth picking up, otherwise you're not missing much if you skip him.
