Toy Review: Transformers The Last Knight Premier Edition Optimus Prime (Voyager)
Review: #388
Name: Optimus Prime
Brand: Transformers
Allegiance: Autobot
Line: The Last Knight
Year of Release: 2017
Size Class: Voyager (Wave 1)
Mold Status: new
VEHICLE MODE:
For the fifth movie, we are treated to a brand new mold for Optimus Prime in the Voyager size classed, based upon his Age of Extinction and The Last Knight appearances.
It transforms into a long-nosed truck with flames that's accurate to the movie. The robot shield can store on the back, while the sword is slotted onto the underside out of sight.
You can remove the shield which reveals the hitch. This is a really good truck mode with no gappiness and solid all around.
The only play value is the six rolling wheels.
Above is a size comparison against Generations Titans Return Megatron. Optimus is a decent size and heft.
Another comparison, this time with Age of Extinction Leader Optimus. They're both about on par in accurateness in vehicle mode, but the Leader version wins out with the silver chrome.
A fantastic vehicle mode that is hard to fault.
TRANSFORMATION:
The transformation is quite nice and clever, especially when the legs are formed by the rear and also the sides of the truck, as well as the front hood which folds into his calves. Optimus is mostly a shellformer but a neat one since the panels cleverly tuck away and doesn't hang off the robot in obvious pieces. It's easy going from mode to mode.
ROBOT MODE:
The robot mode is where the figure truly shines as with the benefit of a finalised movie design and a few years of time, it's much more accurate to the onscreen model.
There's quite a bit of kibble but they all tuck close to the body so doesn't feel too horrible and they don't get in the way either.
The headsculpt is good and the bright blue eyes doesn't look as bad in person. A bit more silver would go a long way in showing off the intricate sculpting though.
In terms of size, he is a little bit shorter than Titans Return Megatron.
When you compare is against the previous movie's Leader classed figure, it is night and day. This version is much more steamlined with heaps of sculpted detailing. The silver highlights works wonders.
The dark grey isn't too bad in person either, the only improvement that could have been made (apart from dousing the whole figure in paint), is that the guards on his thighs aren't painted blue. That would have completed the knight look.
Articulation is great. The shoulder pieces move around to free up movement and not get in the way.
Optimus comes with his sword and shield. The shield is unfortunately painted in bright "Allspark" blue.
The shield pegs onto his forearm while he can wield his sword in the other hand.
When not in use, the sword can slot into a sheath on his back.
Optimus's articulation includes joints for the waist, shoulders, head, elbows, knees and hips. You won't have a problem posing him.
Of course, he looks great when paired with the equally stellar Voyager Megatron from the same line.
A stellar robot mode that like the vehicle mode, does not have many flaws, if at all.
OVERALL:
This is a solid update to the form that Optimus had taken on from Age of Extinction onwards. It looks fantastic in both modes, and it doesn't have an annoying transformation to boot. Not only looking accurate, Optimus is also fun to fiddle around with, definitely highly recommended.
