Book Review: Deadman Wonderland Vol. 1

Review:  #725
Title:  Deadman Wonderland Vol. 1
Series:  Deadman Wonderland - 1st volume
Author:  Jinsei Kataoka & Kazuma Kondou
Read Before:  no
Comments:  An interesting concept in which prisoners held within the private prison Deadman Wonderland, is also a tourist attraction, with amusement rides and shows performed by prisoners.  Of course, the twist is that these shows can be fatal, and the rules are harsh and brutal.  Prisoners earn Cast Points to purchase better food and luxury items so it doesn’t seem too bad in theory.  Ganta, through circumstances beyond his control is thrown into prison as a death row prisoner, with the unfair condition that he must earn enough points to delay his execution everyday three days, which seems stressful.  The first volume doesn’t play much in this fact since it is mostly set up and teasing of the reader of the mysterious red person, and the power that now lies within Ganta.  Plenty of things are teased and the world is engrossing enough to keep you wanting more.
