Toy Review: Transformers Generations Power of the Primes Volcanicus
Review: #458
Name: Volcanicus
Brand: Transformers
Allegiance: Autobot
Line: Generations - Power of the Primes
Year of Release: 2018
Size Class: N/A
Mold Status: new
DINOBOTS:
Volcanicus is formed by the five Dinobots: Grimlock, Sludge, Snarl, Slug and Swoop.
They look great as a group in alternate modes and they are the group with one of the most consistent color schemes.
Robot modes aren't bad either and they present a nice update to their original toys, one that's very overdue.
VOLCANICUS:
The default combination for Volcanicus has Swoop and Slug as the arms, Snarl and Sludge as the legs, and Grimlock as the torso.
His proportions don't look great in photos but it is more acceptable in hand because he feels huge and hefty when you pick him up.
The headsculpt is so so. It still looks great but a tad bit generic. It is on a swivel joint.
In terms of size, above is a comparison against Deluxe Blurr and Voyager Optimus. Being comprised of four Deluxes and a Voyager, Volcanicus towers over both of them.
One benefit of the Power of the Primes combiner is that their feet are bigger as they have Grimlock's feet piece combined with one of the spare hand pieces. Meanwhile, the hands have two thumbs which sucks.
Volcanius in theory has your standard articulation, with either ratchets or hinges for shoulders, elbows, waist, hips, knees and ankles.
Unfortunately, the flaw of Grimlock comes into play despite the compromises made. The pieces on top of the shoulders (which doubles up as holding it together) detaches too easily. The shoulders struts push the arms too far away from the body to look good.
Each of the Deluxes can function as an arm or leg so you can swap them around just for the fun of it.
Volcanicus is a bit wider with Snarl and Sludge as arms. The Enigma of Combination can be left in the feet or pegged into Grimlock's mouth.
Thanks to the tight ratchets of the hips and ankles, Volcanicus is able to pull off some dynamic poses without keeling over.
Yes, there are flaws with Volcanicus but he is quite solid and sturdy in hand, as long as you don't handle him too roughly and dislodge the shoulder pieces.
OVERALL:
Volcanicus is a nice extra if you have all five Dinobots. By no means is Volcanicus worthwhile if that was your only reason for getting the Dinobots though, but is a great bonus that doesn't compromise their individual modes too heavily.
