Toy Review: Transformers Earthspark Megatron (Deluxe)

Review:
#756
Name:  Megatron
Brand:  Transformers
Allegiance:  Decepticon
Line:  Earthspark
Year of Release:  2023
Size Class:  Deluxe (Wave 1)
Mold Status:  new

ALTERNATE MODE:

As part of the new cartoon comes a new design for Megatron, and he transforms into a tiltrotor aircraft.

This is actually quite a unique alternate mode for any Transformer, let alone Megatron, and it does suit him.

He is a tad bit on the smaller side when in hand compared to Deluxes in previous lines, even accounting for the gradual shrinkages over the years.

The alternate mode is done well, the only major flaw is that his robot fists are visible underneath the wings.  One cool element though is that his robot gun splits into two and then actually forms part of the rotor engines on either side.

He comes with the left arm of the Mandroid build-a-figure.

A good solid alternate mode.

TRANSFORMATION:

Simple yet functional.  The back splits into two and then unfolds to become the robot legs.  You take the two engine covers which are the gun halves, when you split the front into two to form the arms.  Push the torso down to reveal the head and you're done.

ROBOT MODE:

Megatron's robot mode has new elements as well as familiar ones, and he looks fine here.

The only major piece of kibble here are the wing rotors, otherwise he is fairly clean.

The head sculpt is a bit iffy, there's just something off about it and he does not look menacing at all.

He's a tad small in robot mode as well, and coupled with the general hollowness, he can feel cheaper and more fragile than you would like.

Articulation is okay, he has joints for his head, shoulders, elbows, hips, knees and ankles.  Surprisingly, he lacks waist articulation.

He comes with a black gun.

You can peg the gun onto his forearm to mimic his fusion cannon, but the port is too far back so the gun's position looks off.

The other big flaw is the panel with the wing rotors on each forearm.  They do not lock into place, and they are big enough such that they get in the way as well.  It's not a great design and could definitely have been improved upon.

Alternatively, Megatron can hold the gun in his hands but this is also awkward given that the gun is so large.

Megatron looks good in his robot mode but there are some issues, mainly concerning around his arms.

OVERALL:

Despite his flaws, Megatron is still a neat figure if you like the design.  The alternate mode is great, while the robot mode also looks good, just that his arms sometimes get in the way of playability.
