Jack the Giant Slayer

A retelling of the fairy tale Jack and the Beanstalk, it follows the "standard" story while adding in plot devices to fill up the feature time.  Introduced into the story is the human antagonist and a crown which can magically control the giants.  Most of the film centers on Jack's initial encounter with the beanstalk, then exploring the giant kingdom and finally escaping it.  Of course, being a Hollywood film, the climax (which is approximately 40 mins of the film) has the giants arriving and a short battle ensues.  If you were expecting a lot of giant deaths then you would be disappointed.  That said, there is still some violence but they have dampened it by showing it offscreen etc (which is good as excessive gore isn't usually that great).  The storyline can be predictable at times and the film heavily relies on computer graphics which is a hit and miss depending on the scene.  It is also a classic story in the fact that the princess ends up falling in love with a commoner.  Overall, Jack the Giant Slayer wasn't too bad, a bit average but contains enough thrills to be a fun ride.
