The Wizard of Oz (1939)

The Wizard of Oz is a classic film based upon the book of the same name by L. Frank Baum.  It is a musical with some great pieces of music and songs which are still well known and used today.  The story is somewhat faithful to the book, of course, there had to be changes.  Considering the age of the film, it holds well to this day.  There were obvious film techniques such as a flat background which is painted to give the illusion of wide expanse of the fields.  The film stalls a bit during the middle as Dorothy quickly meets up with Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion, reaches Emerald City and then get diverted to the Wicked Witch of the West.  The climax and the demise of the Witch was severely disappointing in that it felt abrupt and truncated.  However, the film manages to capture the magic of the book and tells a great fantasy.
