Title: My Friend the Enemy
Series: N/A
Author: Dan Smith
Read Before: no
Comments: Set in World War II, the setting is a small village in England following Peter, who meets a new friend, Kim. Together, they develop a friendship when a German plane crashes and a German soldier is still loose. As expected, the two find the German soldier, Erik, and end up helping him. They develop a friendship even with the language barrier. The constant threat of Erik being discovered and killed keeps the tension high. The various subplots also works well together, from Peter’s dad in the army, dreading everyday whether the bad news would come, to the romance between Peter and Kim, and then to the bullying. What made the novel so perfect was the ending. Right until the end, you knew the story had to end soon but not sure how it was going to be pan out. The ending was bittersweet and emotional. It wasn’t until that moment where you come to realize that you have developed bonds with the characters and with the ways turn out, not everything can be perfect. The ending was the highlight of the novel but the overall story was engaging too.
