Toy Review: Transformers Bumblebee Bumblebee (VW) (Speed Series)
Review: #496
Name: Bumblebee
Brand: Transformers
Allegiance: Autobot
Line: Bumblebee
Year of Release: 2018
Size Class: Speed Series (Wave 1)
Mold Status: new but shares the engineering with wavemate Camaro Bumblebee
VEHICLE MODE:
More in line with the movie, this version of Bumblebee transforms into a Volkswagen Beetle.
It looks great, although the back is ruined by a huge peg hole, which is part of the gimmick as you can use a launcher to launch the toy.
Bumblebee is a bit small but that is also the case with the real life vehicle. Above is a comparison against TLK Crosshair.
A great vehicle mode and well painted too (only the rear windows are unpainted).
TRANSFORMATION:
A simple transformation as you'd expect of something this size. The sides pull out to form the arms, the back unfold for the legs and the front folds down to form the chest. It's effective and it works well here.
ROBOT MODE:
Bumblebee's robot mode is equally good being well proportioned and is actually quite accurate to the character model.
He doesn't have much kibble, only the roof of the car on his back.
The headsculpt tries to be detailed but is a bit undefined. It's still recognizable as Bumblebee mind you.
Bumblebee grows taller in robot mode, now the same size as Crosshairs and most other Legions.
Articulation is decent, particularly since he has knee joints (as a result from his transformation scheme). This is coupled with balljointed shoulders and hips.
While unfortunately he suffers a tiny bit from the ugly post as part of his knee, after all's said and done, at least it isn't as bad as the placement on Barricade.
A fantastic robot mode including the break of the yellow through strategic black plastic and metallic paint on the arms.
OVERALL:
This is a very nice little figure. While they are getting a tad bit expensive nowadays, Bumblebee is one of the better designed figures in the line.
