Batman Returns

Batman Returns starts of well enough, the opening scenes being fairly interesting and exciting.  Sadly, like it's predecessor, that's about it, it doesn't rise much more than that.  There are a lot of 'wtf' moments and plot holes that ruin the enjoyment of the movie.  It feels like the writers wanted the film to be serious and dark, yet gave up halfway and said "stuff it, let's just go along with this".  There are some events that are unexplained or hard to rationalize.  Things such as how Selina changed into Catwoman.  How did she survive from that fall?  How did she suddenly become so agile and proficient at fighting?  It never explains, she just does it.  There's also a scene where the Penguin (yes, he's the antagonist of this movie) sabotages Batman's batmobile.  For a guy (and his team) who has been in the sewers for all his life, they sure know a thing or two about the advanced weaponry of Batman's, enough to effectively destroy the batmobile.  Same goes for the Penguin going for mayor, errrrrrr, a person who has just been known to the world as the guy who's been living in the sewers for 30+ years suddenly become popular enough to be a candidate?  All this, and more, causes the viewers to question the movie.  The portraying of Penguin was pretty convincing though.  One good thing is that we get to see more of Batman here, the bad thing is that he seems so stiff and slow during fights.  Also, he just loves to reveal his identity so freely (and his mask rips off easily too...).  It's also sad that a lot of characters from the first movie was cut out, either with no explanation or with a passing remark (i.e. the relationship with Vicki).  Slightly better than the first movie, but still not that great.
