Comments: The Rook has a good premise, a woman wakes up surrounded by dead people wearing gloves, realizes she’s lost her memory and is tasked with finding out the mastermind behind the plan to kill her. Not only that but she is part of a secret organization that deals with the supernatural and has powers of her own (able to control people’s bodies, causing them psychic pain etc). She gets letters left from her previous self which gives backstory details. The author manages to wrap all of this around into a very good tale. It does start out being your average run-of-the-mill thriller mystery but once the ball gets rolling and around one-third of the way in, it ramps up until the finale. Betrayals happen, the traitor is revealed and plans begin to unravel. The characters are likeable and some of the special powers are remarkable. It was heaps of fun finding out the limits of each characters’ powers. It was also good that the author has no reservations towards any deaths although the impact is lessened somewhat when there was a bunch of characters introduced and it was still somewhat difficult to distinguish who was who. The same could be said when the antagonist was revealed. The ending felt like it was too rushed. If you were expected an all-out war or battle then you will be disappointed. In a way, the ending did make sense although it still left some loose ends. A great story that gets better and better the further you get.
