Cutthroat Island
Cutthroat Island is a classic pirate adventure for treasure. Geena Davis stars as the female pirate captain Morgan Adams in search of a hidden treasure, but first, she has to collect all three parts of the map. Cutthroat Island has adventure, romance and naval sequences so it all sounds like a great film but it ends up being bloated with inconsistent pacing. The first hour is a tough slog, while the second half isn't that much better but at least it had all the set pieces such as cannon fire between two ships, and a lot of sword fighting. The obligatory romance between the two lead characters lacked chemistry. They fall in love with each other but they don't complement each other in terms of what they added to the film. By the end of the two hours, you feel as though they writers could have shortened it to give it a brisker pace since there were too many scenes where the viewer would simply not care what happened. Cutthroat Island doesn't try anything new for the pirate genre of movies but there are a few redeeming qualities that makes it worthwhile to watch if you're prepared to slog through everything else.
