Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials
After the surprisingly good Maze Runner, you would hope that The Scorch Trials will be able to carry the momentum. Unfortunately, it didn't carry over what made the first film good and this made The Scorch Trials seem like a generic and aimless film. The ending of the first film made it clear that it was not over, and that Thomas was still being deceived, yet The Scorch Trials' plot drags on for the first thirty minutes and we do not learn much of significant. Even after Thomas escapes and goes out into the post-apocalyptic world, it does little to explain the backstory and how it got to this point. All we get are some passing comments and a lot of zombie-like creatures attacking the characters. The biggest flaw is that Thomas' objectives aren't clearly defined. Sure, they want to escape and find the resistance but everything is so vague and feel so contrived that it is not able to keep the viewer engaged. The fantastic sense of urgency in the original film is noticeably absence here, and as a result, you don't care for the characters as much. That said, there were a few scenes where the characters' fates and decisions impact you. Overall, The Scorch Trials leaves a lot to be be desired and is a lacking sequel.
