Toy Review: Transformers Robots in Disguise (2015) Combiner Force Springload (Legion)

Review:  #355
Name:  Springload
Brand:  Transformers
Allegiance:  Decepticon
Line:  Robots in Disguise (2015)
Year of Release:  2016
Size Class:  Legion (Wave 10)
Mold Status:  new

VEHICLE MODE:

Springload transforms into a 4x4 pickup truck.  Due to the small size, a few compromises were made, the bottom half of the front is unpainted black plastic, and the sides have visible black transformation hinges.

There's some random spots of black on the back too, these are the faux wheels for robot mode.

You also might want to note that the truck bed shows off the robot head.  Being such a small size class, there weren't many places where you could hide such a huge head and so this was the best hte designer could do.

Springload is quite small in this mode, smaller than other Legion classed figures from the line such as Clampdown.

His only play value is the rolling wheels.  All in all, this is an average alternate mode.

TRANSFORMATION:

This was a surprise as it is a little bit more complicated than expected.  The back splits apart to form the torso and reveal the front legs, while the front of the truck twists to form the rear legs.

ROBOT MODE:

In line with most of the Decepticons from the line, Springload takes cues from an animal, his being a frog.

He is actually very show-accurate but this is because he features a number of fake kibble, such as four additional molded wheels  (his shoulders, and his rear feet).

The head takes up a large proportion of the body but he has painted teeth!

Being a quadrupedal, he is small in this mode as well.

Looking at him from some other angles, Springload can look very weird.  His front legs are huge while his rear legs are small for example.

The poseability is limited.  It's hard to get meaningful articulation out of him.  His mouth does open though which is neat.

A robot with a lot of character, just a bit static but this is a byproduct of the small size.

OVERALL:

Springload is a worthwhile figure purely because he is at this scale.  The designer has done a good job translating the onscreen character into a toy form.  The robot mode is charming and the unique design works well.  He is a bit limited in play value because of the static nature of both modes though.
