TANK MODE:
Based upon the version of Megatron from Revenge of the Fallen, he transforms into a Cybertronian tank.
The tank is generally much better than previous attempts although the back is still somewhat of a mess of exposed transformation joints.
There are plastic wheels beneath the treads which allows the figure to roll. This figure comes with small side guns that can tilt up and is pretty cool.
Megatron is a Voyager classed toy and above is a comparison against Generations Combiner Wars Motormaster. Megatron is a decent heft but does have some hollow gaps.
True to the movie design, although a bit stupid looking, is the exposed head between the two front treads.
A decent tank mode. There's just something charming here that makes it work.
TRANSFORMATION:
The transformation to robot mode is pretty interesting. The treads and the sides of the tank twist to form the legs while the arms unfold from the turret. Getting everything to tab and lock together in tank mode can be annoying but otherwise Megatron is well designed.
ROBOT MODE:
The robot mode is truly where this figure shines as it is much more screen accurate than the previous Voyager and Leader toys.
The accuracy extends to the back too which is impressive, this includes the back thrusters and leg guards (which loves to pop off at the slightest touch).
The headsculpt is great, only being let down by the bland unpainted grey plastic. If this figure ever gets a silver coat of paint, it would look amazing.
In terms of size, Megatron is big and bulky in robot mode.
However, due to transformation, his torso is completely hollow. This is slightly disappointing but at least since everything tabs together so well, he is still solid in hand.
As part of the Studio Series line, the figure comes with a cardboard stand.
In Megatron's case, it is from the forest fight scene, and is the exact same as the one that came with Optimus.
While Megatron doesn't come with any extra weapons, his giant clawed cannon for his right arm is more than enough.
The left hand is jointed in three sections and the skinny fingers are made from a softer plastic to prevent breakage.
The articulation is great and perhaps on what sells the figure is how the treads for feet now split in two and closely mimics the character design.
A fantastic robot mode and is strong enough to be the sole reason to get this figure in the first place.
OVERALL:
Megatron is a good toy. While you may be skeptical of a Cybertronian alt mode, the tank is pretty well done and the robot mode is just stellar. Megatron is menacing in robot mode and the screen accuracy is a very nice touch. The biggest letdown is the hollow torso and the unpainted grey plastic but they can be overlooked in light of the engineering achievement.
