Frankenweenie
Frankenweenie is a stop-motion animated film directed by Tim Burton. As the title suggests, it is inspired by the classic Frankenstein story. It tells the story of Victor, who has a very close bond with his dog, Sparky. For the first fifteen minutes, the movie manages to build up this bond and create something significant from it, such that the audience really cares about Victor and Sparky. While the film slows down after the first act/experiment, it never manages to be boring. It keeps your attention as you wait for whatever happens next. Frankenweenie is a touching story about a dog and his owner, their friendship and how even through death, it does not cease. That is until the climax in which the tone noticeably shifts and it feels more like a monster horror story than anything else. It was really weird and jarring, and there are some scenes in which you don't know whether to take seriously or not since it just feels so unbelievable that they went this route. Once you accept that fact, the film ends on a good note. Another thing is that the movie is black and white, which is interesting but ultimately, color would have been preferred (even if it is a muted color like The Nightmare Before Christmas). Overall, Frankenweenie was surprisingly enjoyable.
