Title: The High Road
Series: Elf Realm - 2nd book
Author: Daniel Kirk
Read Before: no
Comments: The High Road has a slow start, taking a fair chunk of the book before it gets into the swing of things. After the events of The Low Road, Matt teams up with the elf Tuava-Li and the troll Tomtar as they journey to the North to bury a seed and restore the elf world. What pads out the length of the plot is the fact that it also follows the journey of Matt’s sister, Becky, on her journey. Both of their aims are the same, in that they originally wanted to rescue their parents but the things that happen to them are vastly different. The High Road lacks the fantastical creatures and lore that normally sucks you into these kinds of plots; as a result, it can feel flat and bland at times. The characters are not very likable or relatable, especially with the amount of secrets the elf keeps from Matt. Treachery is a common event, making you wary of each new character that is introduced. It is hard to fathom some of the reasoning behind the characters’ decisions, and the story is bloated with unnecessary events that does not have a lasting consequence. Overall, The High Road has a solid story but a weak ending that obviously leads up to the final book and thus feels somewhat unfinished.
