Title: City of Lost Souls
Series: The Mortal Instruments - 5th book
Author: Cassandra Clare
Read Before: no
Comments: Within City of Lost Souls, there’s probably a potential of a good story in there. Unfortunately, even more so than previous books in the series, it focuses heavily upon the relationship aspect. It literally spends 80% of its pages excessively describing the loving, kissing and cuddling actions of each pair, and every single character has a love relationship going on when the book does not need so many of these characters. It gets to the point where it is too much and four pages are spent on the descriptions. After that comes the insecurities of each character in their relationships, doubting themselves or their partner, or clichéd humor and actions, it’s tiring, lame and cringeworthy. It is worse because the reader is mostly likely not to be fans of all the characters, you simply do not care what happens to them because you know that it will work out in the end. Apart from that, the story is interesting continuing straight after City of Fallen Angels, with the new threat trying to take over the world once again. Despite the core of this world created by the author based upon religious mythology, it is uninteresting and the whole book feels flat. There is little character development since the characters act as they have always been. There will be a lot of times where you want to hit Clary for making such irrational decisions or having her one-track mind still remaining on Jace, Jace and more descriptions of the perfectness of Jace. City of Lost Souls feels neither amazing nor bad, but it is definitely bloated with uneven pacing.
