Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1
As you'll come to expect from Harry Potter films, it's a bit dull, boring and frankly, goes for too long. I honestly don't know why these films get such good reviews but anyway, Deathly Hallows - Part 1 only really sets it up for the climatic battle that we all know is coming in Part 2. The film doesn't do such a good job at explaining the importance of the Deathly Hallows, and it can be hard to follow the plot if you haven't read the books already. Although surprisingly, they have followed the book quite faithfully. Sure, there were some shortening of certain events, but for the most part, everything was there. It would have been better if they could have fleshed the Ministry infiltration section further, to show the amount of planning Harry did beforehand, and the tension once they were within the building. Since this film adapts the first half of the book, it's also the more boring half, being the overly long camping/on-the-run-without-aim sequence. Harry and Ron becomes a little bit unlikable due to how they act. They never fully explained how the Snatchers managed to find them (the name "Voldemort" was jinxed, whoever spoke it would be traced), things just... sort of happened, as the plot required it. The ending is supposed to leave you hanging for the second part, but it's hard to feel the urgency since the true extent of Voldemort's dangerous nature was never shown.

Book Review: Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them
Review: #312
Title: Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them
Series: Harry Potter - companion book
Author: J.K. Rowling
Read Before: yes
My Comments: While it’s a short book, it contains all the magical beasts that had appeared in the Harry Potter universe (I think) and much more. Reading through it, a couple of them were so interesting that I wished they had some sort of appearance in the mainline books. A few of them there is enough content that you can even write spin off books from! While some of the entries are clearly filler and aren’t too interesting at all, most of them were good, and it makes the Harry Potter universe more grounded to reality. Each of the beasts were plausible. It would be better if there were more annotations made by Harry and Ron, as they were amusing and funny. This companion book doesn't feel lazy at all.

Transformers Poses 13
13 is an unlucky number for some... but I don't think there's anything wrong with it. It's probably one of my favorite numbers too.
Well, that's it for another round.

Book Review: Chaos Effect
Review: #311
Title: Chaos Effect
Series: Hero.com - 4th book
Author: Andy Briggs
Read Before: no
My Comments: Wow, I am speechless. The author’s writing style has improved so much when compared to the first book in this series it is simply amazing. The story that was told within this novel was addictive and absorbing. Throughout the whole book, you’re presented with unanswered questions, but the way they were presented were balanced enough not to get annoying, and the answers were satisfying. You emphasize with Toby (the main character), and a lot of things are resolved here. The unfair disadvantage for the main characters was very well done, and how they ended up in victory is a story worth reading. Simply put, the plot was very well done and the way the final villain was defeated was brilliant, and an action packed rush. Toby’s jealously was understandable and justified, and I liked how everyone made up with each other by the end. The deaths were meaningful. However, the only flaw I could really pick up was the way the series was presented, in two separate but intermingling series of books. Here, we couldn't see what was happening on the other side (Jake Hunter’s arc). This feels like a final book in the series with everything that has happened but surprisingly, it’s not.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Seemingly a better movie to sit through than Order of the Phoenix, but just like that one, the earlier moments of the movie were better than the latter ones. As is the trend these days, this movie has a dark tone, and is the final movie to chronicle Harry's daily life in Hogwarts. That said, it falls into the same trap a lot of book adaptations does, shortening and omitting events. This has the effect of things not fleshing out correctly, not explaining things thoroughly enough such that it confuses viewers (if they didn't already know what was going to happen, i.e. read the book) and making it harder to enjoy as everything is rushed. A lot of focus was put towards the relationships between the protagonists, sure, I guess they need to make it more noticeable rather than just coming out of nowhere, but it seemed out of place and forced. I would have preferred if they hadn't had changed the way Harry got the memory out of Slughorn, it was perfect in the book. The way Harry does in the book (already having learnt that he was asking about Horcruxes) seems more clever and puts more emphasis on repeating the same actions as Tom Riddle. The cave section, where Dumbledore retrieves the next Horcrux wasn't done good. They managed to drag on and on about the relationships but when it came to the proper plot elements, they do a rushed job.
Many revelations were not explained and even the depiction of the small island seemed weird. Finally, what happened to the climax of the film? It's weird to note that in the book there is a major battle at the end, while in the movie, possibly due to time limits (and if so, then it's quite stupid considering they can cut out a fair few boring/useless scenes), there is no fighting. So, they managed to add in a stupid pointless battle at the Burrow, but couldn't add in a small fight in Hogwarts that was actually canon? *spoiler* Dumbledore's death and Snape's betrayal was disappointing and doesn't deliver the emotional impact that it should. *end spoiler* Then there's the title, the importance of the Half-Blood Prince was just shoved aside, and when it came to actually finding out who it was... you don't care, coz this "Prince" (or his textbook, to be more precise), didn't play a large enough role to have any effect on what had happened in the film. While it's easier to sit through and there were some good humor, I would rather just spend the extra couple of hours sitting through the book, at least then, you would fully appreciate the intricacies of the plot.

Book Review: Captain Underpants and the Terrifying Return of Tippy TinkleTrousers
Review: #310
Title: Captain Underpants and the Terrifying Return of Tippy TinkleTrousers
Series: Captain Underpants - 9th book
Author: Dav Pilkey
Read Before: no
My Comments: A Captain Underpants book that feels very different to all that came before it. It’s more of a book that describes the hardships of going to school (kindergarten in this case) such as bullies and overcoming them. The first eight chapters is like any other book, with the appearance of Captain Underpants and a lot of nonsensical events. After that, it does a whole three sixty and is completely logical and understandable. We have a look at how kindergarteners Harold and George overcome a big bully by pulling some pranks on him. It was an enjoyable read with some good humour. The ending was odd and unusual, and can feel a bit cheap. Personally, I’m surprised at the length of the book and the amount of text in it.

Toy Review: Transformers Generations Fall of Cybertron Kickback
Review: #126
Name: Kickback
Brand: Transformers
Allegiance: Decepticon
Line: Generations - Fall of Cybertron
Year of Release: 2012
Size Class: Deluxe (Wave 3)
Variations: none as of date
INSECT MODE:
Kickback transforms into a Cybertronian insect that resembles a grasshopper or a wasp. He features six legs and clear purple wings.
While he rests solidly on the table, there has been instances where the friction for his insect leg joints is too weak such that he cannot stand on those legs (i.e. he can sag depending on your luck).
Kickback has a well defined abdomen although you can see his hands underneath.
Kickback is quite large but he lacks the solidness of vehicle Transformers. One of his flaws is that his legs doesn't peg into the body so they can flail about.
His legs are also a sore point. They seem lazy since there's minimal effort to distinguish them from the robot feet, and they do NOT look like insect legs (this seem to be a common complaint about this figure).
Surprisingly, the insect head works. It's basically the back of his head. The lower jaw (the grey bit) hides this fact quite well, I'm quite impressed.
The wings are on balljoints so you can adjust them according to your preference. You can also store his weapon but sliding it into slots that are on his wings.
The weapon is big and bulky and doesn't suit Kickback's insect mode at all but at least it stores somewhere. The shade of purple used is excellent.
While it's far from the best insect/beast mode ever, I think it does a decent job. It's supposed to be Cybertronian anyway, so it should be vague and disappointing, :P. Anyway, I for one am a fan of this mode and I think the designer had done a good job.
TRANSFORMATION:
A complex and convoluted mess. It's not elegant and going from robot to insect, it can be confusing even after you have done it a few times. The transformation is a mess of limbs, basically, Kickback unfolds and all of his limbs flip to the other side. Personally, I didn't think it was fun and it felt unnecessary.
ROBOT MODE:
Pretty much universally agreed upon is that his robot mode is awesome, or at least, it looks awesome. From the shoulder pads to his extra arms hanging over his head, Kickback oozes awesomeness.
He's relatively free of kibble, the most obvious would be the insect legs that just hangs from his back. It feels awkward and this also means you cannot pick him up by holding the back since these insect legs get in the way.
The headsculpt is good, and he looks suitably evil (he is a Decepticon after all). Despite having clear plastic for lightpiping, it doesn't work at all. The antenna is made of soft rubbery plastic and is adjustable.
Kickback has big feet that makes sure he's standing up and stable in a huge variety of poses.
Kickback stature can mislead you, he isn't that tall at all. He's shorter than most Deluxes and some of the Scout sized figures (such as the PowerCore Combiners and pre-2011 Scouts) are almost as tall as him.
His wings are detached for transformation and he can hold them in his hands as swords.
Frankly, they're not too convincing since it's too short and wide.
His other weapon, and you can't miss it, is his disc launcher. It has a pressure launch mechanism, thus the distance it launches the disc will vary from toy to toy (on my one, it doesn't fly very far at all). Apparently, this weapon bears a resemblance to the Gear Shredder weapon from the Fall of Cybertron game.
You can also plug in the wing pieces onto the ports on the weapon. The default is to attach it so the weapon looks like a crossbow, while if you plug them on the other end, you can imagine it's some sort of drone insect (takes a lot of imagination though).
However, you may also leave the wings where they were in insect mode, and let Kickback sport a pair of wings.
It does look quite good from a number of angles.
Obviously, Kickback can hold the weapon, however, it's too big and unwieldy for him. It's also too heavy so his arm tends to sag.
The other option is to attach the weapon onto his back and now he sports a jetpack. Kickback's feet are large enough to sustain the heavy weight on his back.
Kickback has a lot of articulation, sporting even rotating wrists. His extra arms are also balljointed at the ends and have a hinge joint in the middle.
His feet can be limited depending on how much spread you need while posing, but it is on a balljoint.
As mentioned Kickback has a great stature, and the paint applications highlight the figure well. He features gold paint in various areas.
There are some 5mm pegs on his extra arms if you wish to use those as well.
Hardly any complaints for this robot mode. It displays very well and is an impressive addition to your collection if you so desire.
OVERALL:
An excellent toy, although it may be an acquired taste. The insect mode is clearly the weaker mode here, but the robot mode is exceptionally strong. Don't worry about him being too small, since he still feels hefty in your hands (although that might be due to how big his weapon is). He poses well and is a pleasure to the eye. Highly recommended!
