Book Review: Half Moon Investigations

Review:  #774
Title:  Half Moon Investigations
Series:  N/A
Author:  Eoin Colfer
Comments:  Eoin Colfer spins a wonderful and intriguing mystery starring Fletcher Moon, in the small town of Lock.  Moon is a gifted child detective but he gets in over his head when he ends up encountering the local troublemaker Red Sharkey.  The pair teams up through unusual circumstances and must solve a mystery that would ruin their lives if they fail.  The plot is excellent, it is intricate and there are a lot of little details that foreshadows the true perpetrator that might not be obvious during the first read.  The ingenious thing is how the author managed to think up of a plot that works perfectly in a school setting, yet isn’t too farfetched as to be unbelievable or being too low stakes.  Both Moon and Sharkey are likable characters, each with their own positive traits.  There are a few red herrings and truly surprising moments where even the most innocent of characters aren’t quite what they seem.  The ending was stellar in terms of the bluff that Moon had to pull off, leading to a gripping finale and you can totally feel the pain and hurt in the dialogue.  While the beginning is slow and it takes a third of the book before it gets into the meat of things, Half Moon Investigations is a great tales that serves as a great introduction to the detective genre.
