Appleseed (2004)
Appleseed is a computer generated anime film based upon the manga series. Being computer generated in 2004, it hasn't held up as well as traditionally animated films. Where there are still plenty of details, the character animations can be awkward at times. During action sequences, they aren't bad at all but the more subtle quieter moments are where it falls down as something just seems off. The story is set in a world where war has reduced the human population, they now live with human clones called Bioroids who are sterile and do not feel emotions. It takes a while before the titular Appleseed is mentioned and explained, which then become the focus for the rest of the film. It follows the human Deunan Knute, who is a trained soldier and later revealed that her parents are extremely important figures in this world. Unfortunately, the pacing is slow even when the central conflicts comes to the forefront. Even with all the gunfire and action sequences, you can't help but feel that Appleseed is lacking that touch. The film has potential in its themes of the conflict between races but it doesn't manage to capitalize on it.
