Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a feature length animation film centering on... Spider-Man. Instead of retreading the same type of plot as the live-action films, or even just like a simple extended episode of an animation, Into the Spider-Verse has a unique take on its plot. After many years of origin stories and focusing on Peter Parker, we instead get Miles Morales who is Spider-Man. This isn't to say that Peter Parker won't be showing up. The film assumes you already know the background of Spider-Man and his origins, the film even makes fun of this fact. That's the great thing about Into the Spider-Verse, it isn't afraid to poke fun at itself and the various directions that Spider-Man had taken, whether for good or for worse, in the past. Ultimately, the draw of the film is the fact that a multi-verse exists, and through it, various incarnations of Spider-Man turn up and join forces to defeat the villains of Mile's universe. It's epic and it's awesome when the various incarnations of Spider-Man team up and fight. The visuals coupled with the stylish acrobatics and slick animation really pops and works wonders. While the animation style can be weird at first, it suits its comic orientation. The plot isn't too complicated and at the end of the day, it still is an origin story but done in such a way that it feels fresh and engaging. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a surprise hit, with great storytelling and visuals.
