Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is based on a book, and is a film directed by Tim Burton, thus has his distinctive visual style. The visual style is what prevents the film from becoming a complete borefest. It has a very interesting premise but fails to capitalize on it, instead preferring to go down well-trodden paths and have cliched event after cliched event. Jake had grown up listening to his grandfather's stories, about his adventures in a house living with other children who had special abilities. Every day, time reverts back to the start of the morning. It takes a good twenty to thirty minutes before all this comes into play and Jake sees it with his own eyes. The introduction of each character and their powers were engaging but then it slips back to boredom as it takes another half hour before their problems are finally revealed and the villain that is behind it all. Perhaps most surprisingly is the design of the monsters, they have a very creepy look to them and will definitely scare younger audiences. It ends in a predictable and unsatisfying way but at two hours long, it took too long to get there.
