Abominable (2019)
Abominable is an animated film that takes place in Shanghai, China, a relatively rare place for such a film to use as its setting. It follows Yi, who is still mourning the loss of her father, in her own way, but keeping herself busy. However, she finds a yeti on top of her apartment and develops a bond of friendship with it. Together, along with her cousins, they wanted to protect it from being held captive by an organisation and so they travel together to the mountains where the yeti lives. The yeti, affectionately named yeti, seems to have strange powers that progressively gets stronger over the course of the film. The premise isn't exactly too compelling and unfortunately, despite the good animation, the film suffers from slow pacing. From the very beginning until the yeti shows up, and then all the way to the end of the film, it just doesn't feel like anything substantial. The humor, which is usually one of the bigger drawcards to these types of films, isn't original and is predictable. The story never feels like it gets going, and it never feels like the characters are going on a fun journey, plus, the film lacks a villain that you want to hate.
