Book Review: The World God Only Knows Vol. 18

Review:  #743
Title:  The World God Only Knows Vol. 18
Series:  The World God Only Knows - 18th volume
Author:  Tamiki Wakaki
Read Before:  no
Comments:  An excellent volume once again, and also very packed with content.  Dealing with the aftermath of Keima’s rejection to Chihiro, and the complication of Ayumi witnessing it firsthand, Keima has trouble getting back on track in order to awaken the last goddess within Ayumi.  Giving to a more intense atmosphere, Vintage is quickly proceeding with their plan, to the point of getting into action and significantly derailing Keima’s efforts.  It was great seeing the interaction between Ayumi and Chihiro, and the awkwardness of Keima’s interactions with those two.  You know that Keima is going to succeed eventually (otherwise the world would be destroyed and that definitely would not be the ending) but the interesting part is how.  Unlike previous efforts, Keima is on uncharted territory and he has to adapt as developers are progressing quickly and unexpectedly.  This is what makes this goddess arc so engaging as the stakes are high and Keima keeps digging himself into a trap now that a few of his previous “conquests” remember what happened and their feelings strengthened.  Of course, the humor is still here to help keep things somewhat lighthearted despite the heavier atmosphere and this balance is kept in perfect sync.
