Book Review: your name.

Review:  #766
Title:  your name.
Series:  your name.
Author:  Makoto Shinkai
Read Before:  no
Comments:  This is the novelisation of the film with the same name and it is a wonderful piece of work.  While still enjoyable on its own, you’ll derive more enjoyment if you have watched the film.  This novel complements the film extremely well, since it is written in first person, we get a lot more insight into the characters’ thoughts.  Furthermore, the author took the time to flesh out a few more plot points and added in explanations such that the questionable plot holes are forgivable now.  Your Name is about two high school teenagers who periodically swap bodies.  They each discover the joys of living in the city or countryside.  Due to the short length, the plot moves forward briskly, leading to a great pacing of the story events.  While it loses the visual splendour, you gain much more through understanding how each event psychologically impacts the characters.  The ending derives the same sense of losing something and trying to find your way, leading to a bittersweet moment.  It is surprising at how well the novel evokes the same sense of longing as the film, and as a result, this is a fantastic piece of writing not to be missed by fans of the film.
