Book Review: Game No Life Vol. 8
Review: #913
Title: No Game No Life Vol. 8
Series: No Game No Life – 8th volume
Author: Yuu Kamiya
Comments: While the previous volume was encumbered by a poor translation and confusing plot developments, this volume helps saves it. This is because not only is the translation easier to make sense of and flows better, it explains the motivations and reasons behind certain characters’ actions in the last volume. Sora and Shiro are still within the Old Deus’ game but starts off facing against Jibril in a game inside game. This takes up the first half and at this point it’s still confusing on why Jibril is hell bent on betraying her masters that she seemed to love so much. Then the revelations start pouring in, from explaining Jibril’s actions to Plum’s betrayal and even how big the scope of siblings’ current plan is. While pieces start slotting into place, a few of the explanations were a stretch, it feels as if the author wants to bamboozle you with complex reasoning but ends up being too complex to easily digest. The plot ties heavily with volume 6, there are heaps of references to Riku and Schwi’s actions during the Great War. The ending helped close off the story arc that spanned three volumes and you can appreciate how far Sora and Shiro has come in this world. At times, the writing tends to veer too much into the creepy territory and there is a fascination it seems with Sora being a lolicon which doesn’t gel well.
