Based on the TV cartoon series, despite the cover art, the majority of the film is 2D animation. The plot is your typical Spongebob Squarepants plot in that it centers along the Krabby Patty formula and Plankton's attempts to steal it. Most of the film feels like a typical episode and if you like the Spongebob cartoon then you will like this movie. Like the first film, it mixes in live-action and eventually CGI which can feel somewhat weird but it manages to work better in this second attempt. While it borders on extremely weird and wacky towards the end, the plot is actually half-decent. A lot of the humor works well and it feels like all the characters are having fun. It doesn't go out of its way to try and push some sort of lesson for the viewers. Even though it touches upon "teamwork" as a key theme, it never gets too serious and likes to play around a lot with puns (including visual puns). A surprisingly good film that has little of what makes some annoyed with the cartoon.
