Mirai is an anime film that's small in scaled but packed with emotional depth. It starts off showing a couple get married, have their first child, pamper him, and then eventually having a second. The first child, Kun, having been his parents' sole attention since his birth, now has to deal with his younger sister taking it all away from him. His sister, Mirai, is just a newborn baby, and naturally, everyone fusses over her. The issues that Kun has to experience is very real, from being overlooked to behaving badly to get a response from his parents. The plot starts to take on more fantasy elements soon after when Kun meets the future Mirai. Eventually, Kun discovers various stories of his family from when they were younger and it becomes a bit weird in terms of what is actually happening. Is it all in Kun's head? Or is there something magical actually happening? The animation style also seems to shift from time to time, especially during the scenes with heavy CGI that looks out of place. It is a slow paced film with plenty of mundane moments like Kun learning how to ride a bike. It isn't quite up there with some of the best anime films, but it does pack a few emotional punches that give you pause as you ponder what it must be like.
