Toy Review: Transformers DOTM Bumblebee (Legion)

Review: #34
Name: Bumblebee
Brand: Transformers
Allegiance: Autobot
Line: Dark of the Moon
Year of Release: 2011
Size Class: Legion (Wave 1)
Variations: although a new mold for DOTM, already repainted a few times in various exclusives and as an action set.

VEHICLE MODE:

Third movie, and third revision of the Concept Camaro (well, I guess it is in production now as the fifth generation Chevrolet Camaro). This time, Bumblebee sports a spoiler, and a different design for the racing stripes (now going over the roof and they are wider apart than before).

Unlike the previous version, Bumblebee doesn't have anything that sticks out of the bottom causing it to drag, I'm happy to say, this guy rolls very smoothly. All the windows are painted, which is great, even with the cost cutting, they haven't lacked out on paint.

I can't tell which mold is better in vehicle mode, as both of them have their flaws, and both of them fall down flat when viewed from the behind. In this case, in order to achieve an improved look and function of the feet in robot mode, we got two gaps at the back, and although some details are there (molded exhaust pipes, Chevy logo and the license plate), the gaps detract from all this. It doesn't help that there is no paint to distinguish anything and there are no tail lights.

Picking him up, you will immediately feel that he is small, really small, to the point where I noticed it straight away. Comparing him to the previous version, I can see that it is a small size overall, it's thinner, shorter, and less height, generally, less plastic used (I haven't resorted as to going so far as to weighing him yet). Even when compared to RtS Prowl, who was a pretty small toy in it's own right, Bumblebee feels even smaller, such a sad fact...

Viewing the underside, you kinda see the same basic overall placement of parts, so people might hesitate twice before buying one if they have the previous mold. I think this is a good cheap third movie version of Bumblebee to get, especially, if like me, I wanted all three versions of the Camaro but can't justify getting the larger versions. I can't say whether this is better than the previous mold or not, but it's a good Legion sized vehicle.

TRANSFORMATION:

The transformation basically takes the transformation from the previous ROTF version and changes it to give some improvements to robot mode. I guess you do get the sense of getting ripped off, but then again, how many ways can you engineer a Legion's transformation? I do feel it's tad bit more fragile, especially with the thumb, mine already has a stress mark and over time, I can see the thumb snapping. It's not as fun to transform as the ROTF mode, and not as fast, it's a bit more fiddly and a few extra pegs to secure the vehicle mode, but not a bad transformation.

ROBOT MODE:

At first glance, the robot mode looks immediately better than it's predecessor. In particular, he doesn't have the wheels awkwardly placed on the outside of his hands. His right hand is molded into his blaster, I would have personally preferred two hands, as it's too flat and from any other angle it doesn't look like anything.

The wheels on his shoulders look great, and his feet are really awesome, quite screen accurate in fact. Even from the behind, he looks quite good, the only thing they can improve the accuracy here is if they could give joints to the windows so he can have the proper 'wings'.

The head sculpt is not as nice this time around, I think the previous version had captured the design perfectly while this one seems a bit too cutesy and baby-ish. I think the huge eyes painted in baby blue does it more disservice than anything else.

Again he feels really small in robot mode, and he is clearly shorter than any other Legends I have. A bit disappointment in that aspect. I do like how the chest now sits a lot closer to his body, it helps out the look a lot, and his thighs are not overly long.

Again, although looking similar, DOTM Bumblebee is a relatively different toy. His left hand is designed to hold weapons that comes from the Cyberverse line, although I have doubts about this due to the thin plastic of the thumb, it seems that if the pegs are just marginally too big, it'll snap Bumblebee's thumb off like a twig.

Bumblebee is at least quite poseable, with the addition of knee and feet joints. Overall though, he is quite limited in his movements, due to the parts get into the way of each other, especially the shoulders, despite how it looks, they have really limited spread, and same with the knee hinges, you can only bend them back a little bit before it hits the car roof behind. In this aspect, the free range movement of the ROTF mold is more fun.

OVERALL:

In theory, this is superior to the ROTF mold in every way, from the rolling in car mold, to the added accuracy and poseability in robot mode. In reality, I find myself having a lot more fun with the ROTF mold, from the larger size to the transformation. I guess you would only get this guy if you particularly like Bumblebee, or you don't have any other versions, or, like me, the only reason was that he was cheap.

Book Review: How to Draw Deltora Dragons and Other Creatures

Review: #79
Title: How to Draw Deltora Dragons and Other Creatures
Series: Deltora Quest - Companion Book
Author: Marc McBride
Read Before: no
My Comments: An ok book, not that I was expecting much so it didn't really disappoint me, I was merely curious and got it so I could have a look at the pictures, which are really nice. It shows you how to draw the creatures in the Deltora Quest series, although with my talent, it would be quite hard to follow and I doubt I can draw as nicely as that. Personally, I don't think the instructions are enough but I’m not an artist, and never will be, never tried, so everything would be hard for me. I’m saying that coz each picture has around six steps for you to follow and the picture is quite complicated. Not really a must read, I would only recommend it if you are interested in drawing, if not, don't worry about it.
Rating: 5/10 (I feel indifferent about this book, no gain or loss by reading it)
Rereadability Factor: 0/10 (not interested in this type of thing)

End of Mayoi Neko Overrun! Manga

Didn't really notice this but turns out that the manga version of Mayoi Neko Overrun! has ended, no more serialization, just learnt that today, which means it ended at the same story arc as the Anime did. It was just starting to get good, oh well, here's my comments for the last two chapters (which were more like Extras) that will never be in tankobon form. I will miss this series...

9 – The Maid’s Splendid Daily Routine

Changing from monthly releases into quarterly releases, it would seem that even the chapter lengths have gone down, with this chapter only around twenty pages long. Not sure if that is a good or bad thing, but, this chapter was ok. A few moments that’ll give you a chuckle, but the story is not anything special. We are treated with a look into the rich girl, Chise’s life and her relationship with the maids that seemingly can pop up from anywhere.

10 – Kanae Spike!

I’m not sure if this is the case or not, but I feel that the chapters are getting better than the earlier chapters. In this one, the cast is entering a volleyball competition and they are training up for it. A lot of good moments, so this made the chapter quite enjoyable, but one fault I can pick is that we don't get to see the result. All we get is a photo of them being runner-up, so we don't really get to see the fruits of their efforts, and it was getting into the mood as well.

Transformers DOTM DA-15 Jetwing Optimus Prime Extras 2

Part 2 of the posting of extra photos from Dark of the Moon DA-15 Jetwing Optimus Prime. For Part 1 click here, and for the review, click here.

ROBOT:

Robot mode from the front, very athletic looking, and amazing how close it is to the CG design.

I still think for the movie Optimus head, if the faceplate was wider he would have looked more awesome.

Weird place to put the MechTech port, as any weapon plugged there will look awkward, and obvious that Optimus isn't really holding it (even though that's the whole point of the port there). Besides, it ruins the smooth look of the forearm, as there's now an awkward hole.

The back of Optimus, very plain without the extra paint, and with the gas tanks there, it makes it look quite kibbly.

The back with the tanks taken off, a lot cleaner and slicker.

The buster cannon formed by the two tanks.

Taking aim...

He retains the Mech Alive gimmick even with the remolded abs. There is a piece that flips down and you can press down on it to 'flex' his chest and if you have batteries in, he will say "I am Optimus Prime".

The underside of one of the forearms showing the new clips that helps secure the Gatling guns when the Jetwing armour is put on.

JETWING ROBOT:

Optimus tilting his head up, annoying that you have to unplug a couple of things before you can tilt his head like that.

The two HUMONGOUS guns that Optimus carries, almost too big, but it is intimidating.

Optimus gripping the cannon.

The heel pieces that plug onto Optimus' feet.

The shoulder pads from above, they are big and clamp onto either side of the head, bulking Optimus' shoulders up.

The shoulder pads are on a hinge that can lift up and down.

The back of Optimus with the armour clamped on, it fits very snugly.

There are two main connections, the hook at the top, and this spring loaded clamp at the bottom of the backpack as shown above.

The wings down configuration of the armour.

Back view.

Wings completely down.

Wings up.

Well, that's all the pictures I have, so hopefully you have gleaned something useful from them.

Transformers DOTM DA-15 Jetwing Optimus Prime Extras 1

The first 'extra' post in terms of my Dark of the Moon DA-15 Jetwing Optimus Prime review where I post up all the unused photos that I had taken. Part 1 is going to focus on the packaging and vehicle mode, while Part 2 is going to focus on the robot modes.

PACKAGING:

As I said earlier, the colour choices for the packaging could have been chosen a lot better, the yellow really ruins the whole look, it makes it look very weird.

A shot from a slightly different angle (and much darker too). I found it really hard to take a good photo that showed the contents without using flash, and this was at night, I couldn't wait until the morning to open up this guy...

A close up of Optimus inside, he was surrounded by so many twisty ties that it was a pain to free him. I've said it before, the way he was packaged, it was so nice that I would be tempted to display him sealed.

The left side of the box advertising the MechTech compatibility and stats, not that I am too interested in either.

The right side where the bio is contained, personally, I don't care too much about this either... I found that they had used the same stock photo on ALL sides of the box, yeah, all six surfaces, you can see the same stock photo of him, geez, as if putting it on two sides wasn't enough.

Top of the box, not much to say here really.

...and the bottom, where the background is completely yellow, I much prefer the space background. Anyway, on it is... you guessed it, the same stock photo, as well as the name, so no matter how you store the box (or how the box is put on show) you will always know who was in this box.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Here are two samples of the instructions booklet, in which it is FULLY TRANSLATED into ENGLISH. A really really nice touch I must say, and it does make the transformation much less ambiguous. He comes with two instruction sheets, one for the Jetwing Armour and the other for Optimus himself.

For the instructions for Optimus himself, you might think that they will just reuse the ROTF version, and you are right, to a degree. They've taken the time out of their way to go and replace the photos of the ROTF Optimus with the Jetwing Optimus retool, not completely neccessary, but again, really nice that they did it. I just can't believe they took the time to go translate the whole package (well, the bio card is still in Japanese I guess).

VEHICLE MODE:

I really do miss all the paint apps that Optimus should have gotten, he looks fairly drab here and plain, not like the 'premium' figure it is supposed to be.

I think it is a great truck overall, and the only noticeable thing that detract the look is the small gap at the trailer hitch section, where if you look carefully, his knee caps show.

You can clearly see the "Mech Alive" gears in the colourless front windows, and I do think this kills the realism a bit, it's fine in robot mode, but in vehicle mode it is just ridiculous. That said, we usually see robot kibble through the windows anyway on other figures so I cannot critique this one.

JETWING:

Top down view of the armour, although it is impressive, I cannot help but think that the thrusters are shaped too much like a tube... I wish they were more angular and less circular.

This configuration pretty much only looks good from this angle, as the guns flanking the sides is impressive here, but as I said before, it sits too far out to the side to look plausible from anywhere else.

A picture showing the rubber connectors of the guns, this helps the gun clip on really securely.

Looking at this I guess I would prefer a proper trailer like the Ultimate version.

I like how they bothered to paint the inside of the thrusters to be red, and the sculpted detail on the jet pack overall is fantastic.

Spreading the wings so he can fly...

OTHER:

With the additional of Jetwing Prime, I can finally give the second buster cannon to my Buster Prime, and the dual guns look GREAT on him. Granted, one is unpainted ugly grey plastic so it doesn't suit the figure overall, but at least it's dark enough to be passable.

Firing both at the same time...

Anyway, click here for the second part of the Extra photos.

Book Review: Artemis Fowl: The Graphic Novel

Review: #78
Title: Artemis Fowl: The Graphic Novel
Series: Artemis Fowl - 1st Graphic Novel
Author: Eoin Colfer, adapted by Andrew Donkin
Read Before: no
My Comments: I’ve had my doubts about graphic novels but Artemis Fowl The Graphic Novel is a great adaptation of the book. It didn't lose any of the important information and is really easy to follow, even if you have never touched the novel before. I admit although the drawings were nice, the depiction and appearance of the fairy characters were nothing like what I had imagined, on the human’s side they were passable (the best drawings were Artemis Fowl and Juliet). This style of drawing might not be my taste but it is still a load better than the Percy Jackson graphic novel. The author and artist of the book has really done a good job, I couldn't wait to go through the next part, wanting to know what was going to happen. Although it doesn't capture the true genius of Artemis Fowl they way the books does, it’s still enough to convey to the reader that he is one smart 12 year old boy. The little ‘fact files’ after each chapter does a good job of providing some background information that they would not otherwise be able to fit in the normal course of the story (unless it’s an awkward explanation forcibly fit into someone’s dialogue), a great and engaging graphic novel, can't wait to read the adaptation of the second novel.
Rating: 8/10
Rereadability Factor: 7/10 (a great one to reread in the near future)
